Manuscript Collection – Secondary Resources

This page contains the secondary source documents relating to the Revolutionary War within the WCHS Manuscript Collection. Historians created each of these manuscripts and typescripts by compiling research on specific aspects and events of the War period. The topics include French involvement in the Revolutionary War, the skirmish known as Mosier’s Fight in present-day Rye Brook on December 2, 1781, and the route of British Major John André before and after his capture on September 23, 1780.

The French Army in Westchester County

Description

James Wood, who served as President of the Westchester County Historical Society from 1876 to 1900, delivered this address at an annual meeting of WCHS.  It chronicles the encampments of the French army in Westchester County during the summer of 1781 and September and October of 1782.  The 1781 encampments took place before the allied American and French armies marched south for the campaign that culminated with the British surrender at Yorktown, while the 1782 encampments took place after the battle and before the French army departed for the West Indies.
