Description
The Reverend Johannes Ritzema served as pastor of the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow from 1744 until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Here, he writes a letter in Dutch to an American officer, believed to be General Philip Schuyler, to inquire about the condition of his son, Colonel Rudolphus Ritzema. He also congratulates Schuyler on the American victory at the Siege of Fort St. Jean. Rudolphus Ritzema later changed his allegiance, became an officer in the British Army, and left the country after the end of the war.
