Colonel Willett’s Promise

Colonel Willett’s Promise

Description

Marinus Willett (1740-1830) reached the rank of colonel during the Revolutionary War, and later served as Mayor of New York City. Here, he certifies that he had promised each the 60 soldiers of the Oneida Nation who were under his command at the Battle of Johnstown on October 25, 1781, a blanket if they pursued the retreating British forces. Writing more than 10 years after the battle, Willett notes that this promise was not fulfilled.

Notes

At the time Willett wrote this letter, Johnstown was located in Montgomery County, New York. It has been part of Fulton County since that county was created in 1838.

This facsimile is taken from the 1862 edition of D.T. Valentine’s Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York.
