Description
Abraham Hyatt was born in Westchester County in 1747. On November 21, 1776, he was appointment “second lieutenant of the company number eight of the Fourth Battalion of New York Forces.” Hyatt’s commission was signed by John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, and attested to by Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress. On June 28, 1779, Hyatt was appointed a lieutenant in the Fourth New York Regiment, to rank from November 9, 1777. This commission was signed by John Jay, President of the Continental Congress, and attested to by Peter Scull, Secretary of the War Board. Abraham Hyatt died on June 3, 1820. The monument at his grave in Dale Cemetery in Ossining describes him as “one of that band of INCORRUPTIBLE PATRIOTS, who, by their valor, achieved the Independence of their Country, and transmitted to their posterity the fairest form of Government that human wisdom can devise.”
