Westchester During the American Revolution: Digital Resources and McDonald Interviews

WCHS has made an assortment of materials centered around the Revolutionary War in Westchester accessible online. Find the resources by clicking here, or navigate to “The Revolutionary War in Westchester County: Digital Resources” under the “Collections” tab on our homepage.

In our Manuscript Collection Virtual Archive, we have provided digital images, brief descriptions, and transcriptions of primary documents from the WCHS library. Documents include a partial militia roll for the Third Regiment of the Westchester County Militia Brigade, a petition for redress by Mary Totten for damages to her farm, and a thank-you note from George Washington. We have also added secondary documents, such as an essay on the French Army in Westchester that was prepared for an 1895 meeting of WCHS.

The Revolutionary War Soldier Burial Index is a list of veterans buried in Westchester County. It is based on Works Progress Administration records (available through the Westchester County Archives digital collections) and the work of historian Margaret Roebling Manville. This is an ongoing project and will be updated as additional research continues.

There is a link to our recently released digital collection, Experiencing the Neutral Ground of the American Revolution: The McDonald Interviews, that offers access to over 400 first-hand accounts to life during the Revolutionary War in Westchester, told by residents who were interviewed from 1844-1851.

Lastly, Revolutionary War Related Articles from Early Historians is a selection of articles compiled from the quarterly journal of the Westchester County Historical Society. To see more of articles (Revolutionary Era and beyond), see the first 52 volumes that we recently were able to make available with funding through a Preservation Grant from the Polly Cooper Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution: Quarterly Journal – Westchester County Historical Society.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary year of the American Revolution, we hope this will be an interesting resource for researchers and those interested in learning more about Westchester County during the Revolutionary War.
